With a powerful melancholy take on shoegaze, Dublin based female-led quartet Dream Boy have released their debut EP called Drowning in Blue

The EP consists of four lush, lyrical tracks, plus a bonus reimagining of the opener. The first track Ivory sets the tone with its rich, somnolent textures, pulling the listener into a dreamy soundscape. It’s followed by Bleed, a standout piece wrapped in sombre harmonies and dense instrumentation – brooding, dark and chillingly beautiful.

The atmosphere fractures with Eyes Closed, the EP’s lead single. Stark and unsettling, it addresses themes of sexuality, shame, and manipulation. “eyes closed is equal parts intimate and fuelled with anger,” the band explains. “Exploring themes of sexuality and shame, the song dives into an intrusive thought of feeling objectified after a distasteful experience.” In fact, Dream Boy specialise in crafting emotionally charged lyrics rather than allow them to be drowned out by their sonic landscape.

Dream Boy have definitely nailed a strong and distinct sound and the future looks promising for their live shows (there’s one happening in Dublin shortly) and hopefully more songs on the way.

Drowning in Blue is produced alongside Daniel De Barca and mixed by Joe McGuirk (Janksy), of local band Ten Hail Marys, and mastered by Belly Button Record’s Rafael Hilario.
