Jim Ghedi’s new single called The Hungry Child has just been released on Basin Rock.
A starkly bleak track, and more political than his previous work, Jim comments on the idea for The Hungry Child thus: “I wanted to push the sound even more heavier, chaotic almost like capturing the sound of destruction, as things are collapsing around us.
The idea is taken from a German poem from 1806–1808 translated by Judith Piepe, who entitled it ‘The Procrastination Song’. It’s a story of a starving child, who’s pleading for food and told to wait until it’s too late. The words resonated with Ghedi who saw a narrative of the oppressed being repeatedly ignored, unrecognised and left to starve.
Opening with the ominous sound of the drone, Ghedi’s vocals enter with heavy, leaden and muffled distortion, it’s an inhuman sound that emphasises the narrative. There’s a wildness and a chill that pervades this song, and it doesn’t let up. Jim Ghedi has proved to be adept at distilling a sense of drama, and this track certainly falls into that category.
The track comes with a dark video shot in the Peak District by close collaborator and director Jordan Carroll. The bleak moors are the ideal backdrop and accentuate the unsettling nature of the story.
Jim Ghedi will also release his first film soundtrack for A24’s thriller The Death of Robin Hood, after being approached by director Michael Sarnoski. A dark adaptation of the 17th-century folk-tale Robin Hood’s Death, the film is out in June 2026 and stars Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård and more. Watch the trailer.
