Just a few tantalising weeks ahead of their tour, which includes dates in the UK, The Besnard Lakes have released a single called She’s An Icicle.

This new track is in keeping with the feel and atmosphere of their last, triumphant album The Besnard Lakes Are The Last Of The Thunderstorm Warnings, released in early 2021, and reviewed here. The song is the first glimpse of work to be featured on their upcoming EP, Are The Prayers For The Death Of Fame.

This track is gorgeous, yearning, otherworldly psychedelia. She’s an Icicle was recorded at the same time as their album and feels like ‘the one that got away’… it radiates the same shimmery, majestic sound, written as the band’s vocalist and guitarist Jace Lasek mourned the death of his father, wrestling with ideas about life, death and life after death. It has that similar yearning quality, as if we’re communicating with something or someone far away, across the divide. Woozy guitar notes chime like bells before we’re in familiar Besnards territory with Jace Lasek’s signature falsetto.

At the midway point, the song suddenly ramps up its tempo; we reach a moment of euphoric release, a joyous abandonment. Maybe it will rouse the crowd at their upcoming gigs to do a bit of dancing… time will tell. The third part of the song has a dreamy feel, but with a sense of resolution, a sense of being at peace.

The band say about this latest work – notably about that middle section: “The original had many parts strung together and it was all a bit goofy. We eliminated most of the other parts and then Oggy said it was too boring so we reworked one of the parts to make it less goofy and shoved it in the middle of the track.”
