Ride Lone­some, Beck­’s first col­lec­tion of all-new mate­r­i­al since Hyper­space, will be released Sep­tem­ber 18 via Capi­tol Records. The album is pro­duced by Beck and mixed by Nigel Godrich.

A sec­ond track has just been released from the new work called In The Night. The song con­jures the haunt­ing son­ic land­scapes and tex­tures that hark back to Morn­ing Phase and Sea Change, fea­tur­ing a num­ber of musi­cians who played on those releases. 

In The Night is reflec­tive and gen­tle, pos­sess­ing a still­ness that draws you into a med­i­ta­tive space. It opens with a gen­tly plucked acoustic gui­tar, flow­ing into rich, brood­ing orches­tra­tion, intro­duc­ing an under­cur­rent of unease and ten­sion. The lyrics explore the rest­less nature of the mind and its ten­den­cy to lead us to places we may rather not revis­it. Mem­o­ries float into our minds unbid­den and lead us wher­ev­er our over­ac­tive imag­i­na­tions may alight. The dark­ness only serves to increase those neg­a­tive emo­tions and thoughts to lim­it­less pro­por­tions. Beck cap­tures this noc­tur­nal state with haunt­ing beau­ty in the lines: “Dark­ness came on by, With sto­ries of the sky, To bury all the lies, In the night.”

The video is kept sim­ple, filmed in one space to reflect the inten­si­ty of its pro­tag­o­nist’s expe­ri­ence, a tor­tured soul reliv­ing trau­ma. The direc­tor is Mikai Karl, pro­duced by Ryan Smale and stars Denis Lavant (Beau Tra­vail, Mau­vais Sang).

Says Beck: “The musi­cians from my orig­i­nal tour­ing and record­ing band that I record­ed Sea Change, Morn­ing Phase and Muta­tions with – Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Mel­dal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Man­ning Jr., and Jason Falkn­er – recon­vened with me at my favourite stu­dio (Room B at Unit­ed Stu­dios in Hollywood).

We had Nigel Godrich, who worked on Sea Change and Muta­tions with us mix­ing all the songs.  It had been a decade since we went in the stu­dio and record­ed Morn­ing Phase. This time It felt like the play­ing and the chem­istry had evolved and deep­ened – a sound that’s come togeth­er over the decades of work­ing together.
